Step by step
The making of WeeCade bartop cabinet
__________________________________________________

Feeling much more confident after making my first MAME cabinet, I decided to do a much more precise 2d model in Autocad. The 3D model is just a simple model.

This should make a much faster and easier cabinet to build than Project Mame.

I decided to go with a bartop design. The whole idea  is to make it as small as possibly for a 17" LCD and two player setup with decent sound system.

The sides were easily cut out in 12mm MDF board. I used 16mm for Project Mame, but WeeCade is a much smaller bartop and 12mm is more than enough.
The mouldings is mounted with glue and screws.
The buttom is mounted and the backpanel is tested on with the PSU. There aren't much room for mistakes in this cabinet, not much at all.
The speaker-board and top of the cabinet is placed. I also tried to fit the control panel.

The control panel is made from 1.5 mm stainless steel.

I also tested if the light would fit.

Finally the bezel and marquee is made and they fit perfectly.

The marquee is mounted with steel frames.

29mm hole for pinball/coin input it made.
I made this panel to be mounted on the backpanel.

2 x USB
1 x headphone
1 x mic
1 x Powerbutton
1 x Volumecontrol (not installed yet)

Here is the back. I got the PCB from a midi-tower cabinet.
Time to paint the WeeCade.

First two layers of primer. This is important, always use primer first.

Then two layers of paint.

The colour is beige, looks white on the picture though.

Time for mounting the speakers. Not the best speakers, but they will do for now.

The fluorescent light is mounted after the speakers. It is a 12 volt work light for cars that has been modded.

The amplifier is bought on Ebay. It's 2 x 8 watt RMS and runs on 12 volt. Perfect for this project and more than powerful enough for this project, that's for sure!

As you can see there is not much more space than needed. I really tried to make this cabinet as small as possible.

Motherboard and PSU is mounted.

I made these aluminium mounts for the hard disk. I needed something small, so I had to make it myself.

Rest of the space is needed for the monitor and control panel. Tight fit, but everything is there.

Big foot. Large rubber feet mounted.

Control panel for on/off, 2 x usb and audio installed.
The other side of the panel. As you can see, it's a standard pushbutton I have used for power button to the motherboard.
Finally the monitor is installed :D

I made a lot of scratches to the cabinet installing this monitor, but that's ok, I will paint all the scratches when it is completely finished.

You just have to accept that ;)

Here is the backside with the monitor installed. There isn't room for much more inside this cabinet.
First boot to windows. Works perfectly! Always a surprise when everything works the first time around :D

There is some noise from the amplifier though. Got to look into that at some point.

I had to install a small PSU for the amplifier, the PC PSU was too noisy for sound. Good thing I had this one in my basement.
The back panel is mounted. Looks nice.
Finally I received the artwork for the marquee and control panel. The artwork for the control panel is self-adhesive.
It's a bit tricky to mount the artwork. I tend to get quite aggressive while mounting it, so I am always alone while doing it :D
Looks pretty good with the buttons and plexiglass.
Love the light buttons for pause and exit. They are expensive, but well worth the money. I see that now :D
Looks absolutely stunning to me. My best control panel so far. Love the MagStik Plus too.
The messy wiring. I admire those who can make a nice and neat wiring, I am not one of those. But it works just as well.
I installed the control panel after mounting the Ultimarc MiniPac.

Looks nice and matches the beige colour very nice i think.
The marquee is installed and the cabinet is almost finished. I need to fix a few small things inside though.
Just a few last snaps...
Love the MagStik plus. They are just so versatile!
Finally a picture with light in the marquee and WeeCade front-end running!
This is my custom skin for Maximus Arcade front-end.

First the boot animation.

Emulator selection.
Game selection.
